As an activity which has always been associated with punching another person, the combat and martial arts aspect of boxing cannot be denied. But as any boxer will tell you, getting into the ring with another person for a match or to spar is for more advanced boxers. Boxing is a hard workout, whether there’s an opponent or not.
In fact, it’s very possible to have a good workout even while staying at home, all you need are boxing gloves, a good pair of boxing or aerobics shoes, and a jumping rope. For the shoes, although it would be better to have boxing shoes, aerobics shoes or cross-trainers will do. These shoes provide ankle support and as well as adequate support for lateral movement. Additionally, cross-trainers are recommended when doing road work.
Punching bag and mirror are optional. A treadmill would be nice to have, otherwise, it will have to be real roadwork. Again, a necessary part of the boxer’s training regimen.
A word to the wise, home training for boxing is not recommended for beginners. This should be better left to those who are already advanced students who have had prior training in boxing, or doing a home workout on top of the regular boxing gym workout.
Among the exercises is running or shadow boxing while running. This is better done while doing road work, as it is not something easy to do on a treadmill. This may be considered as a warm-up activity or an exercise on its own.
Jumping rope is another aerobic activity. More often under-rated, jumping rope is more strenuous than jogging. Other warm-up activities, besides stretches, are lunges and crunches, push-ups and situps. Pull-ups are nice to have, of course, but it does need a bar to pull yourself up to. A full-size mirror would be a good help in shadow boxing. It also allows the boxer to check his form while bobbing, weaving and throwing punches.
The punching bag is what the exercises would be leading up to. This would be for the power punches and combinations. Where shadow boxing allows to check the form, a heavy punching bag would help in developing punching strength.
Among exercise gears, a pair of boxing shorts and sleeve less boxing practice shirts gives a psychological boost to the budding boxer. Getting in gear, puts the athlete in the proper state of mind, from lacing up the boxing shoes, to putting the gloves on, this edge makes this a fun exercise and recreational activity.
Boxing is not just a sport or a recreational activity. As a full-body exercise, it is a good stress reliever. Specially punching bags. The physical activity of throwing a punch at a bag, and feeling the resistance of the bag on clenched fists releases all kinds of body tensions. Most newbies to the sport take it up for the physical release of stress and tension from their daily work and schedule. This is not just for the exercise, but also for the mental and psychological well-being of the individual.
